A Key Difference In The Reds Team From Previous Seasons

|

Going back to the present, the exciting thing about Liverpool’s team now is how well balanced the starting eleven could be. With Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam and Fabio Aurelio all left footed, it gives the Reds a tremendous threat both from the left and the right for the first time in a few years. The interactivity between Downing and whoever plays left back (Enrique? Aurelio?) will have a very important baring on performances this season.

Even from the pre-season match against Valencia the understanding between Aurelio and Downing looked already to be there, especially when Fabio slotted a great through ball in the second half to Downing who should have done better with the cross. Aurelio commented after the match how good it was to have some assistance on the left side:

“It was the first time we’ve been together on the pitch and we coped well – there were good signs for the future. We needed players like him with pace on the wing. Especially because of his pace and technique, I think he’ll be a very good addition for us.”

As well as those two, the likes of Adam and Carroll, who are more comfortable on their left sides, will give the Reds a wider array of both passing and shooting options too, making Liverpool a far more difficult prospect to defend against than in the last couple of seasons.
